Through little to no work of his own, Zack Snyder has become one of the most polarizing filmmakers in the world in recent years, and now he's back to deliver an update on his return to franchise film-making. Many fans would argue that Snyder is best known for directing Henry Cavill's Superman debut in Man of Steel, but if you conducted a random poll, there would certainly be some other films that received votes. One of those movies is 300, the 2006 R-rated blockbuster starring Gerard Butler that grossed over $450 million at the global box office. Snyder did not return a few years later to direct the 300 sequel, Rise of an Empire, but he did help write the script and produce the film. Snyder has been behind some massive box office hits over the years, even if his recent films have struggled.
Zack Snyder's next movie, The Last Photograph, isn't expected in theaters until sometime in 2027, but after it recently debuted to middling reviews, its future is up in the air. This will be Snyder's first movie since his last two Netflix movies, Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon: The Scargiver, which were maligned by critics and audiences upon release. There were planned to be more movies from the Rebel Moon universe, but after the first two films failed, there have been no updates about future installments. During a recent interview with The Direct, Snyder was asked about the chances of making a third Rebel Moon movie, admitting that they'll need to "get discovered" a little more if Netflix or another studio is going to foot the bill for the big-budget sci-fi threequel:
“I don’t know. I think that, like, you know, I think that, like, you know, because I was saying recently, like, you know, I made those – the director’s cuts of the movies, and I just think it’s, like, one of those things where – and I do feel it, you know, is that as those maybe, like, get a little bit more popular and sort of, like, get discovered, then there’s a little bit more groundswell about maybe making another one.”
Why Didn't People Like the 'Rebel Moon' Movies?
Many fans were critical of the Rebel Moon movies for the overreliance on exposition, meaning that many important moments in the film were overly explained instead of shown and letting the audience reach their own conclusion. Zack Snyder also has a distinct style that leans into stylistic elements like slow motion, which is largely hit or miss with general audiences. The director's cuts of both Rebel Moon movies were met with a better reception than the originals, but they weren't watched by nearly as many people.
