2026 has been a banner year for Tom Hanks, who added another $1 billion-grossing movie to his resume thanks to the premiere of Toy Story 5. The only other movies of Hanks' career to reach this legendary milestone also belong to the Toy Story franchise, but he has starred in plenty of other successful films over the years. 20 years ago this year, Hanks headlined The Da Vinci Code, which is his only non-Toy Story movie to gross over $750 million at the global box office. Even the original Forrest Gump, which was released all the way back in 1994, grossed only $649 million globally, but this number would be much higher today when factoring in inflation. Hanks is now 70 years old, but that isn't stopping him from headlining some of the most-watched projects on streaming.

In the last few years, one of Tom Hanks' most popular movies came in 2021 when he starred in the Apple TV sci-fi thriller, Finch, but that wasn't the first time that he teamed up with the platform for a massive streaming hit. One year prior to the release of Finch, Hanks starred in Greyhound, which has quietly been one of the most-watched movies in the world on streaming since its premiere in 2020. The movie was once planned to be released in theaters, but it fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was one of the many movies released at the time that was ultimately dropped straight to streaming. Hanks initially expressed discontent with this model, but he has since softened his stance, showing gratitude to Apple for saving the film at the ninth hour.

What Is 'Greyhound' About?

The official synopsis for Greyhound, which holds solid scores of 76% from critics and 76% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: "U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause's first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic." Apple TV has already announced that a sequel to Greyhound is in the works, and with the film shooting most of this year, it's all but confirmed that it will premiere before the end of this year. Both Hanks and Stephen Graham are returning for Greyhound 2.
