What if somebody paid you an enormous amount of money to complete a secret job, erased your memory of ever doing it, and then tried to kill you immediately afterward? That's the wonderfully early-2000s setup behind one sci-fi thriller that brought together the writer responsible for Minority Report, the director of Face/Off, and Ben Affleck at precisely the point when Hollywood was willing to give him just about anything.
That movie is Paycheck, and the 2003 sci-fi thriller is officially finding a new streaming home. Paramount+ has confirmed that Paycheck joined its U.S. library on October 1, putting John Woo's (Mission: Impossible II) adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story back on subscription streaming.
Michael Jennings (Affleck) is a reverse engineer. He does technical jobs for certain companies and, as soon as he is done, his memory of the work he has done is wiped out. Billionaire James Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart) offers him a job that will last 2 years, maybe 3, and he promises that Jennings will earn 8 figures. When the job is done, Jennings' memory is erased. But when he goes to claim the $90 million he earned along with his personal effects, he discovers that, prior to the erasure of his memory, he waived his rights to the money. Additionally, the items returned to him were not the ones he turned in when his job began. Later, he is arrested by the FBI, who claim he committed an act of treason and murder.
The cast is led by Affleck and Eckhart, alongside Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) as Rachel Porter, Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as Shorty, Colm Feore (The Umbrella Academy) as John Wolfe, Joe Morton (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) as Agent Dodge, Michael C. Hall (Dexter) as Agent Klein, and Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) as Rita Dunne.
How Good Is 'Paycheck'?
Paycheck currently holds a 27% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers generally finding its collection of intriguing sci-fi ideas less satisfying than Dick adaptations such as Blade Runner and Minority Report. It performed considerably better commercially. Paycheck earned approximately $117 million worldwide against a reported $60 million production budget, including more than $53 million domestically.
Paycheck is now streaming on Paramount+ in the United States.
