Summer camp is supposed to mean swimming, questionable cafeteria food, and friendships that last until everyone goes home. In a horror movie, it usually means the adults are making terrible decisions and someone should have left before unpacking. The setting remains irresistible because it turns an experience built around freedom and fun into a place where getting away can become impossible... permanently.

October is an excellent time to revisit that particular corner of the genre. Supernatural threats and haunted houses have their place in a Halloween marathon, but a lakeside slasher brings its own unpleasant possibilities. There’s also something satisfying about watching a summer vacation collapse while safely enjoying the arrival of fall.

Sleepaway Camp is available to stream free on Pluto TV, giving horror fans an inexpensive way to add the 1983 slasher to their October lineup. The service currently lists the movie in its on-demand library, with its availability supported by Pluto’s October programming coverage. Viewers can head back to Camp Arawak without adding another paid subscription to their monthly bills. Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, the movie stars Felissa Rose as Angela Baker, a withdrawn young camper who arrives with her cousin Ricky, played by Jonathan Tiersten. Angela becomes a target for harassment, while a series of increasingly violent incidents turns the camp into a dangerous place to spend the summer.

‘Sleepaway Camp’ Has More Going on Than Its Infamous Ending

Sleepaway Camp-Karen Fields

Sleepaway Camp is often remembered for its infamous final reveal, but there’s plenty of horror at Camp Arawak before the ending arrives. First-time viewers should go in knowing as little as possible, especially when so much of the fun comes from trying to work out where Hiltzik is taking the story. Angela becomes a target for campers and counselors who treat her discomfort as an invitation to bully her, leaving Ricky to defend his cousin against people who should know better. The murders might be the main attraction, but the cruelty makes the camp feel unsafe long before anyone realizes there’s a killer among them.

That combination of nasty summer-camp drama and increasingly gruesome deaths helped turn the movie into the beginning of a franchise. Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers followed in 1988, with Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland arriving in 1989, before Hiltzik returned for 2008’s Return to Sleepaway Camp. For viewers who only know the original through discussions of its ending, its free streaming availability is a good excuse to discover everything that comes before that notorious final scene.

Sleepaway Camp is streaming free with ads on Pluto TV.
