A Russell Crowe movie with near-unanimous critical praise had been a long time coming; nearly three decades, to be exact. Crowe has starred in well-received movies during this time, of course. But none has held a Rotten Tomatoes score as high as that of his new Western. That said, the movie has struggled to find an audience in theaters, and has now lost the majority of its theatrical footprint after just one week of release. The positive reception will no doubt work in its favor when it debuts on the PVOD market, where Crowe has had exceptional success in recent months with movies such as Nuremberg.
In fact, the month of September was particularly packed for the Oscar-winning star. His previously overlooked crime thriller The Get Out briefly became the number-one hit on the domestic Prime Video rankings, while his new psychological drama, Unabomber, remains the number-one movie globally on Netflix. Ironically, Unabomber has been widely panned by critics. It holds a 23% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the "Certified Fresh" 93% critics' score of Crowe's acclaimed Western. The movie in question premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, and it also features Ethan Hawke alongside Crowe.
