One of the more popular superhero shows of the year has been Prime Video's Spider-Noir live-action series, a loose offshoot of the animated Spider-Verse films (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). Before he returns in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027, Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage reprised his role as Ben Reilly in the stylish Prime Video series, alongside the likes of Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson.
With all eight episodes dropped at once, Spider-Noir received a sudden and immediate surge in viewing figures, which translated to 2.6 billion viewing minutes in just six weeks. The show earned widespread acclaim from critics, earning a near-perfect rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and even scoring an impressive 11 nominations at the Primetime Emmys, winning five. Alas, all of this wasn't enough to reward the series with a second outing, as it was confirmed in September that Spider-Noir had been cancelled.
It's forgivable for Cage to not be the biggest fan of the seemingly ruthless superhero genre at the moment, given the frustrating fate of the brilliant Spider-Noir. In a recent conversation at Fan Expo Dallas, he let his feelings known in an honest assessment of the modern superhero genre. "I do say this with love," Cage began. "When I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight — let's face it, it's all cutting to the fight — it's hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE." Cage isn't a part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, although it seems that every other actor in Hollywood is.
Who Is Starring in 'Avengers: Doomsday'?
Of those countless thespians ready to don ridiculous outfits in the name of one of the decade's biggest movies, who are the biggest names involved in Doomsday? In perhaps the most controversial casting choice, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, although he is starring as the villainous Doctor Doom. Downey Jr. joins the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, and many, many more.
