The last stop before Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has dominated the 2026 summer box office with a theatrical run that has broken countless records, including becoming the highest-grossing movie in North American history. But this wasn't the only huge box office smash this season to feature Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Zendaya. The trio also played their part in Christopher Nolan's historical blockbuster The Odyssey, an ambitious adaptation of Homer's epic.

Called an "unrivaled cinematic spectacle" in Joe Schmidt's review for Collider, The Odyssey is currently the favorite to take home the Best Picture prize at next year's Academy Awards, and is even being mooted to break Sinners' nominations record, set earlier this year. Another of the film's likely nominations will go to Matt Damon, who finally had the chance to lead a Nolan movie as Odysseus. Damon carries this ambitious epic on his war-weary back and expertly captures the weight of his legacy and the devastating consequences of his choices.

Following The Odyssey's success, and as the campaign for a Damon Oscar nomination begins, one of his best early performances is coming to a new streamer. As of October 1, you can stream Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley on Starz. Damon's titular Tom Ripley and his deceitful infiltration into the life of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) is already the stuff of late '90s cinematic legend, and is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name. Also starring the likes of Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film earned over $120 million against a relatively small budget of $40 million at the box office. But how does that compare to The Odyssey?

'The Odyssey' Broke Box Office Records

Somewhat overshadowed by the all-conquering success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey's box office run shouldn't be understated. A hefty $250 million budget was turned into an eye-watering $1.7 billion worldwide, which is easily Nolan's biggest movie of all time, sailing past both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, his only other billion-dollar hits. The Odyssey is currently the 11th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
