Not long after the success of J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves' sci-fi spectacle Cloverfield, another genre movie capitalized on the found-footage trend and ended up grossing four times its reported budget at the box office. Like Cloverfield, it spawned a follow-up, but it wasn't able to launch a franchise of equal cultural worth. The movie in question is streaming for free this month on Pluto TV, where it's primed to be discovered by an entirely new generation of audiences. It serves as a major artifact of the late 2000s, when both found-footage and zombie movies were all the rage. The film was based on a Spanish-language thriller that eventually spawned a four-part franchise.

The remake was headlined by Jennifer Carpenter, who had broken out as something of a Scream Queen with the hit horror film The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which was released in 2005. Around the same time, she landed a major role in Showtime's generation-defining series Dexter. She reprised her role in the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, and also appeared in the Yellowstone spin-off 1923. Carpenter's 2008 zombie movie was directed by John Erick Dowdle, who went on to work with M. Night Shyamalan on the 2010 movie Devil, which was supposed to be the first installment of an anthology series called The Night Chronicles.
