For years, Sony Pictures has been trying to bring Schmidt and Jenko back for a third film in its 21 Jump Street franchise. The original R-rated comedy, based on the core concept of the 1980s police procedural starring Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise, was widely beloved upon its release in 2012 for its self-aware brand of humor, quickly scoring a sequel in 2014 that made even more noise at the box office with a $331.3 million haul. Despite interest from the team, including stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube, in a 23 Jump Street and perhaps more of the zany ideas thrown out at the end of their last adventure, the closest the studio ever came to getting the duo of officers back undercover was perhaps the wild Men in Black crossover that was ultimately confirmed dead in 2019. This year, however, that's finally changing.
Sony has officially set the date for the Jump Street gang's next operation. 24 Jump Street is now opening on December 10, 2027, a bold release that'll put the comedy right before the towering blockbuster duo of Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum on December 17. The whole team is also back on the beat, as Hill, Tatum, and Cube have all officially signed on to reprise their roles as Morton Schmidt, Greg Jenko, and Captain Dickson. They were announced to be in talks over the summer, alongside original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are now producing.
While the Spider-Verse and Project Hail Mary duo won't be back at the helm, one of their frequent collaborators, Rodney Rothman, will carry the torch. Rothman shared in the honor of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar, as he previously co-wrote the screenplay and helped direct, but he's also familiar with the titular undercover program, being part of the team that penned Schmidt and Jenko's college adventures in 22 Jump Street. Most recently, he helped produce the latest Sony Pictures Animation effort, GOAT, earlier this year. 24 Jump Street will be his first solo feature directorial effort, working with a script he penned with Hill and Meghan Malloy.
At this time, plot details for the next Jump Street undercover operation are unknown. However, it's bound to follow a similar formula to the Lord and Miller films, centering on the friendship between officers Schmidt and Jenko as they go on campus in disguise to stop the spread of a new drug and wind up in all sorts of trouble trying to fit in. Sony penciled 24 Jump Street into the plans amid an array of other changes in its schedule. Joining the crime comedy around the holidays will now be Ridley Scott's new Treasure Island film, which premieres on November 11, 2027, while Michelle Yeoh's actioner The Surgeon bows on April 2. Sony and PlayStation's Helldivers video game adaptation, now starring Alan Ritchson, has also been moved back considerably to June 9, 2028.
24 Jump Street arrives in theaters on December 10, 2027. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the long-awaited sequel as more updates come out.
