Before algorithms began informing creative decisions in the world of filmmaking, studios would rely on intuition and judgment to bring together the best-suited actors, directors, and other artists for projects. In the 2000s, Judd Apatow was arguably among the most successful producers in Hollywood, having contributed to the rise of stars such as Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, and Jason Segel. Across the pond in the United Kingdom, director Edgar Wright was having a similar cultural impact with his cult classic Cornetto Trilogy, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Around 2010, someone made the genius decision to bring these two worlds together, while appealing to the growing fanboy population awakened by hits such as Iron Man and The Dark Knight.

The seemingly foolproof project was given additional weight thanks to a narrative that paid homage to the single most successful filmmaker in movie history, Steven Spielberg. Somewhat surprisingly, the movie wasn't the breakout hit that it was designed to be. It stalled just short of the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, and has settled into its reputation as a minor cult hit in the 15 years since its release. It's now streaming on Peacock in the United States — along with Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End — but only for a little while longer.
