Michael Fassbender almost seems to have vanished off the radar in the last few years, but it seems like he's been hiding out in a remote Korean village. Who knew? Apparently he and his wife have been avoiding a mysterious creature while trying to prevent the destruction of humanity in a sci-fi nightmare, and after making a serious impression at the international box office, the movie is now finding a new audience without anybody having to leave their sofa.
Hope, the $46 million sci-fi action thriller from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, is now available to rent or purchase digitally, with the movie already climbing the streaming charts on Amazon and Apple in the United States and Canada. The film, which also stars Fassbender's real-life wife Alicia Vikander, arrived in theaters in September and became a major success in South Korea, earning approximately $36 million domestically before beginning its international rollout.
In the remote South Korea village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki, set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.
The cast is led by Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing) as Go Bum-seok, Zo In-sung (Moving) as Go Sung-ki and Hoyeon (Squid Game) as the young police officer at the center of the mystery. Fassbender (The Killer) and Vikander (Ex Machina) also star, although their roles are closely tied to the film's central mystery.
How Good Is 'Hope'?
The film has received a positive response from critics, currently holding 79% from critics and 77% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb's review was particularly enthusiastic, describing the movie as a "bonkers and bloody blast of alien-invasion insanity" while praising its combination of elaborate car chases, humor and increasingly outrageous violence. The review also highlighted Na's ability to build suspense gradually before allowing the situation to spiral completely out of control.
Hope is available now to rent or purchase digitally through Amazon and Apple, with availability varying by region.
