Netflix didn't make a third season of Mindhunter despite evidence of its growing popularity, but it has certainly invested heavily in true-crime documentaries that come and go every other week. David Fincher, one of the primary creative forces behind Mindhunter, claimed that the show was simply too expensive to justify its existence. And now, with his contract with the streamer having ended, the chances of fans getting a third season of the psychological thriller — Fincher had already shut the door on it — have further diminished. Netflix will, however, continue to release alternatives such as the recent movie Unabomber, which has defied poor reviews to emerge as a solid hit.

While the film wasn't able to compete with some of Netflix's other mid-budget genre films this year, it has remained a part of the streamer's global top-10 chart for a full month now. This year saw Netflix pivot away from mega-budget tentpoles and focus on mid-budget genre films. The strategy apparently paid off, although the recent layoffs at the company would suggest otherwise. Netflix began the year with The Rip, which was followed by Apex, Thrash, and War Machine. Each of those films passed the coveted 100-million-views mark, and two recent releases — The Last House and The Whisper Man — have come mighty close, with more than 90 million views and 80 million views, respectively. Netflix is now enjoying the blockbuster success of Ben Affleck's new thriller, Animals, which has topped 50 million views in two weeks.
