Mahershala Ali is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, and while his new Blade movie may not have worked out, that doesn't mean he won't still be around in new movies and TV shows. Ali was first announced as the next Daywalker in a new Blade movie in the MCU in 2019, but after years of development hurdles and creative turnover, both Ali and Kevin Feige have confirmed that the project has officially been cancelled. Ali was fresh off two Oscar wins for his roles in Moonlight and Green Book when Marvel made the announcement, and also scored an Emmy nomination that same year for his powerful performance in the third season of True Detective. Ali's training for Blade has paid off, though, even if he'll never get a chance to bring the film to life on the big screen.
In addition to losing stars like Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo before the film was ever able to begin production, Marvel's Blade movie also faced quite a bit of turnover in its director. The first director attached to the film was Bassam Tariq, but he left back in 2022 before being replaced by Yann Demange, who also later departed the project. Early last year, it was reported that Ali and Tariq were working together on a new thriller, and now, fast-forward to near the end of 2026, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is set to be released in theaters this weekend. However, the movie began playing in limited theaters (6) two weeks ago, and after jumping to 16 theaters this past weekend, the film also saw a box office increase of 326%.
What Is 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother' About?
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother debuted at TIFF a few weeks ago, and the film holds a nearly perfect score of 97% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. This also comes from 74 reviews, so while it is subject to move a bit, it likely isn't jumping too far in either direction. The official synopsis for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which also holds a strong 92% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, reads as follows:
“From writer-director Bassam Tariq, Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother stars Mahershala Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman who struggles to balance work, faith and fatherhood. When his wife dies, he embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him — and the beliefs threatening to unravel within.”
