With both Reacher and its spin-off, Neagley, having delivered excellent results critically and commercially, Alan Ritchson remains in a league of his own as far as streaming stardom is concerned. Remember, he began the year with the sci-fi action film War Machine, which remains the most-watched Netflix original of 2026 and among Netflix's most-watched originals ever. Ritchson has also delivered consistent results on the PVOD market, thanks to appearances in perennial favorites such as The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and rediscovered hits such as Ordinary Angels. However, he has yet to prove himself at the box office, with two films this year that have delivered so-so results.
The first out of the gate was Motor City, a 1970s-set action film that also featured Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Ben McKenzie, and others. It grossed roughly $3 million at the box office against a reported budget of $30 million, but has somewhat redeemed itself with a solid PVOD run. More recently, Ritchson starred alongside Owen Wilson in the well-received action-comedy film Runner, which opened theatrically in September. The film has grossed approximately $15 million domestically, which puts it in the same range as the two Jason Statham vehicles of the year — Shelter and Mutiny. However, this isn't enough for it to retain its theater count over the weeks as it prepares for a PVOD debut on October 13.
'Runner' Was Embraced By Critics and Audiences
Directed by Scott Waugh, Runner opened in more than 2,500 theaters but is now playing in only 340 nationwide. Distributed by Angel Studios in an effort by the company to expand beyond its faith-based target audience, Runner received positive reviews upon release. It now holds a 77% critics' score and a "Verified Hot" 90% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Fast and gleefully over-the-top, Runner makes the most of Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson's winning chemistry to deliver crowd-pleasing action and humor with plenty of heart."
