It's only been a week since Florence Pugh's Netflix period drama East of Eden premiered to rave reviews and took the world by storm, and naturally, fans still aren't over it. Created by Zoe Kazan, the limited series adapts Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck's 1952 novel of the same name and takes place from the late 19th century to World War I. In addition to Pugh, it stars MCU's X-Men reboot star Christopher Abbott and Grammy and Emmy Award winner Mike Faist.
With a Certified Fresh 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Pugh earns much praise for a masterful performance, which isn't surprising given the actress' impressive portfolio. Speaking of which, she was just as sensational, if not more so, in an earlier psychological drama that helped launch her international breakthrough. The critically acclaimed gem to this day is regarded as one of the greatest modern horror movies of all time that's genuinely more unsettling than viewers expected.
Written and directed by Ari Aster, Midsommar sees Pugh portray traumatized and grieving American student Dani, who is drawn into a violent cult in rural Sweden alongside her boyfriend. The folk horror film, released in 2019, has now found a free streaming home on Pluto TV, where it was added on October 1, 2026. Midsommar also stars Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, and Will Poulter.
'Midsommar' Is the Cult Classic Worth Binging This Weekend
In Midsommar, Dani is mourning the loss of her family after her sister Terri, who has bipolar disorder, kills their parents and herself through carbon monoxide poisoning in a murder-suicide. This affects her relationship with her boyfriend, Christian (Reynor), who months later reluctantly invites her to a nine-day midsummer festival. Christian and his friends Mark (Poulter) and Josh (Harper) were initially invited by their Swedish friend Pelle (Blomgren) to attend the Swedish festival at his ancestral commune, the Hårga. There, things aren't what they seem. What appears to be a pastoral paradise turns into a sinister, dread-soaked nightmare as the locals reveal their terrifying agenda.
In addition to being a critical success as reflected by its Certified Fresh 83% Tomatometer rating, Midsommar was highly profitable, earning more than 5 times its budget. The film grossed $27.5 million in North America and $20.5 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $48 million against a $9 million budget.
