2026 has been a huge year for Ben Affleck, even beyond the release of his new Netflix film, Animals. In addition to starring in the new kidnapping thriller, Affleck also directs the film co-starring Kerry Washington and Steven Yeun. Animals isn’t even Affleck’s first movie of the year on Netflix, either. Much earlier in the year, Affleck reunited with his long-time friend and collaborative partner Matt Damon for The Rip, the Miami-set crime thriller that scored over 100 million views during its initial viewing period. In recent years, Affleck has also earned more than his fair share of both fame and controversy thanks to his role as Batman in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. While Affleck’s Batman never starred in the most beloved projects, most fans agree that the reception to the films is no fault of his.

Even before he was starring as Batman or leading the biggest movies of the year on Netflix, Affleck had done more than enough to establish himself as a forceful actor and director in Hollywood. Back in 2010, Affleck directed and starred in one of the all-time great crime thrillers, The Town, alongside Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, and Rebecca Hall. The film also stars Titus Welliver, who is famous for his role as Harry Bosch in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. 16 years after The Town crushed at the box office, grossing over $154 million against a $37 million budget, the film has found a streaming home on HBO Max as one of the most-watched titles in the world. In addition to starring in and directing the film, Affleck also penned the script with Peter Craig and Aaron Stockhard — the film is based on the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan.

What Is ‘The Town’ About?

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, who also recently featured in the massive blockbuster, It Ends With Us, also stars in a key role in The Town. Jeremy Renner even earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film, which came one year after he also scored a nod for his role in The Hurt Locker. The official synopsis for The Town, which earned scores of 92% from critics and 85% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:

“Doug MacRay leads a band of ruthless bank robbers and has no real attachments except for James, who — despite his dangerous temper — is like a brother. Everything changes for Doug when James briefly takes a hostage, bank employee Claire Keesey. Learning that she lives in the gang's neighborhood, Doug seeks her out to discover what she knows, and he falls in love. As the romance deepens, he wants out of his criminal life, but that could threaten Claire.”
