Zach Cregger continues to prove himself as one of the most impressive voices in horror cinema today. Last year, his incredible blend of eerie horror and strange dark comedy in Weapons proved a huge success both commercially and critically. The film was stacked with great performances, including the likes of Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and more. Amy Madigan's standout turn as Aunt Gladys, which she will reprise in an upcoming prequel, even earned an unlikely Best Supporting Actress Oscar at this year's 98th Academy Awards.

After smashing expectations with Weapons, and ahead of the Gladys prequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters on September 8, 2028, Cregger has continued his spotless horror run with a reboot of Resident Evil. Based on the video game of the same name, this long-running horror franchise has consistently proven popular at the box office, but rarely earns critical acclaim. Cregger's latest has, unsurprisingly, managed both, with Collider's Carly Lane writing that "when Resident Evil works, it really works."

Against a reported production budget of $75 million, Resident Evil has earned $246 million worldwide, split between a $125 million domestic haul and a further $121 million from overseas markets. This impressive return has occurred in just three weekends so far, with the latest seeing the film outperform Tom Cruise's newest movie, Digger. With this in mind, and with Resident Evil expected to continue its strong run into this coming weekend, Cregger's adaptation is set to overtake The Blair Witch Project and become one of the 40 highest-grossing horror films of all time.

Which Movie is Currently Top of the Box Office?

With Resident Evil in second place at last weekend's domestic box office, which was the one film that managed to top it? The answer to that question is the latest Colleen Hoover adaptation, Verity, which debuted with a strong global haul of $61 million. The adaptation is the latest in a particularly busy year for Anne Hathaway, who joins Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in the film, directed by Michael Showalter. Verity has been met with poor reviews from critics, although this is par for the course for Hoover adaptations.
