While Other Mommy defied terrible reviews to overperform in its box-office debut, The Social Reckoning fell short of even modest expectations as it was outperformed by the holdover hit Resident Evil, which has already spent over three weeks in release. The unpredictable top-10 list this weekend was rounded out by a new Western from Angel Studios, the niche outfit that specializes in faith-based films. Angel recently attempted a mainstream expansion with the action comedy Runner, starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson. That film grossed around $15 million domestically against a reported budget of $45 million, and it seems like the new Angel release is going to fare even worse in its theatrical run.
The film stars No Country for Old Men icon Tommy Lee Jones, alongside Shazam! star Zachary Levi and Yellowstone alum Neal McDonough. It follows an outlaw who is given an opportunity to turn over a new leaf by an act of kindness. The movie is the second remake of a 1947 Western classic starring John Wayne. The original's premise, about a rugged man being nursed by a god-fearing community, also influenced a 2003 television film starring Naomi Watts, and more famously, inspired the Harrison Ford-led mystery movie Witness. Wayne's classic was previously remade for the Hallmark Channel in 2009.
