Although titles like DC's new body horror film Clayface and the widely discussed documentary You Can See Everything are currently dominating the box office, several other releases are quietly finding success. That includes the funny and surprisingly tender Wicker, an NSFW fairytale based on Ursula Wills' short story The Wicker Husband. Last weekend the film earned a strong $5.75 million domestically in its theatrical debut, drawing audiences with what Collider's Therese Lacson called in her review "an immensely entertaining watch" and "a fun and quirky story about love and overcoming loneliness."

Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, Elizabeth Debicki and Game of Thrones icon Peter Dinklage star in the film, Dinklage's second big-screen release of the year after Macon Blair's comedy Idiots, which also starred Dave Franco. For Dinklage, the glowing reception for Wicker, whose Rotten Tomatoes score has risen since it hit theaters, is a far cry from the backlash his 2015 sci-fi effort received.

That film is Pixels, the story of an alien invasion of Earth inspired by video games, produced by and starring Adam Sandler. Loosely based on a 2010 French short, Pixels also featured longtime Sandler collaborator Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan and tennis icon Serena Williams, though none of those names could keep the ship afloat. "Underwhelming," "tedious" and "half-baked" were among the kinder critical responses, and the film earned just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. But if that sort of chaotic reception makes you curious, Pixels will be available to stream on Starz starting November 1.

'Pixels' Was At Least a Box Office Hit

Despite the scathing reviews, Sandler and company can take comfort that Pixels at least proved popular at the box office. Against a reported production budget of $90 million, the movie made almost $250 million worldwide, split between $78.7 million domestically and $165.2 million from overseas markets. The film opened in second place at the domestic box office behind the MCU's Ant-Man, before quickly dropping to fifth in its second weekend.
