The Academy has made some baffling choices; in recent years, for instance, Jake Gyllenhaal was snubbed in the Best Actor category for his work in Nightcrawler, while Justin Hurwitz was overlooked for his First Man score. You could've sworn that both Hurwitz and Gyllenhaal had at least been nominated, but no. A major snub in the 1990s had larger repercussions, because it prevented one of his generation's greatest stars from completing a historic hat-trick of Best Actor wins. We're talking about Tom Hanks, who won back-to-back Oscars for his performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, which were released in 1993 and 1994, respectively. He delivered another awards-worthy turn the very next year in the blockbuster film Apollo 13, which came out in 1995, but to everyone's surprise, he wasn't even nominated.

Directed by Ron Howard, the movie is currently streaming on Netflix, but only for a little while longer. It was based on the ill-fated Apollo 13 moon mission, which was aborted due to a malfunction on board. Three astronauts fought for their lives as mission control tried its best to get them back home safely. In addition to Hanks, the movie also featured Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris. Apollo 13 is now considered a classic of the 1990s, having received nine nominations at the Oscars, including in the Best Picture category. It ended up winning two. Hanks, however, wasn't recognized for his work. He would be nominated a few years later for Saving Private Ryan.
