Described as one of Tom Cruise's most entertaining roles, this near-perfect crime drama has found a new streaming home nearly a decade after its theatrical release. The film sees Cruise, a licensed pilot, perform his own dangerous flight stunts without green screens. It also reunites the legendary actor with his Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman, who, using a gritty documentary visual style with natural lighting and unpolished camerawork, gave the biopic the feel of recovered investigative tapes.
Released on September 29, 2017, the crime comedy was an instant critics' favorite, with praise for Cruise's brilliant performance. In it, the award-winning actor steps away from his usual clean-cut, world-saving action hero to play a morally flexible antihero recruited by the CIA. Cruise portrays Barry Seal, a TWA pilot recruited to provide reconnaissance on the growing communist threat in Central America, who soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in U.S. history. The operation spawns the Medellín cartel and nearly brings down the Reagan White House. Currently, the intriguing hit holds a Certified Fresh 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 79% audience score.
