The disastrous box-office debut of Digger has sent shock waves across the industry. How could a star of Tom Cruise's stature struggle to open a movie? How could a wide release of this magnitude gross only $8 million in its first weekend? How will this impact the future of Hollywood? Now, a new report has estimated that the film will lose roughly $250 million for Warner Bros., making it one of the biggest bombs in box-office history. Digger is certainly the biggest flop of Cruise's career, which it was designed to honor and perhaps even earn him that elusive Academy Award. Reviews for the movie have been as divisive as they come, but audiences seem to be united in their disinterest. Cruise's fans are turning to his other films on streaming, including, ironically, one of his most-hated past works.

According to FlixPatrol, Top Gun: Maverick is currently the number-one movie on the global Paramount+ chart, cementing its stature as Cruise's most universally beloved film. The movie holds a near-perfect 99% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Maverick is also his biggest hit, with a global box-office haul of $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, the domestic Prime Video chart has been taken over by Cruise's two Lee Child adaptations — Jack Reacher and its sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. While both movies did solid box-office business, reviews were mixed, especially from fans of the Reacher novels.

More surprisingly, however, Cruise's 1999 epic drama, Eyes Wide Shut, has found a spot on the global HBO Max leaderboard. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, Eyes Wide Shut holds the unenviable distinction of having received a D- grade from CinemaScore audiences. By comparison, Digger earned a C+. Also featuring Nicole Kidman, Eyes Wide Shut was the final film of Kubrick's legendary career. It grossed more than $160 million worldwide against a reported budget of $65 million. That same year, Cruise also appeared as part of the ensemble for Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, which grossed $48 million in its global run. This, unfortunately, is the benchmark for Digger. The movie now holds a 51% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but has already been identified as a future cult classic.
