Taylor Sheridan may be best known for his work writing iconic Western shows like Yellowstone and Landman, but those who have been following his work for a while know he first made a name for himself in movies, not TV. Sheridan made his feature writing debut all the way back in 2015 on Sicario, the epic neo-Western thriller starring Josh Brolin and Emily Blunt. Only Brolin and Benicio del Toro returned three years later to star in the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which also switched directors from Denis Villeneuve to Stefano Sollima. Sheridan and Sollima collaborated three years after the premiere of Sicario 2 on Without Remorse, the maligned Tom Clancy adaptation starring Michael B. Jordan. The film was denied a theatrical release and was instead dropped straight to streaming on Prime Video.

In 2017, only two years after the debut of the first Sicario movie, Sheridan stepped into the director’s chair for another Western thriller, Wind River, in addition to writing the script for the film. Sheridan enlisted a pair of Marvel icons in Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen to star in key roles in Wind River — Sheridan and Renner have also worked together on all five seasons of Mayor of Kingstown. The easiest way to describe Wind River to someone who has never seen or heard of the film is as if True Detective and Bosch were mashed up and placed against the cold, wintery backdrop of a Sheridan-directed neo-Western thriller. Wind River has been streaming on Netflix for a while now, and the streamer has still not announced a date for it to leave the platform, so it’s a safe bet that it’ll be around for at least another month or two.

What Is ‘Wind River’ About?

The official synopsis for Wind River, which holds scores of 87% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: “Cory Lambert is a wildlife officer who finds the body of an 18-year-old woman on an American Indian reservation in snowy Wyoming. When the autopsy reveals that she was raped, FBI agent Jane Banner arrives to investigate. Teaming up with Lambert as a guide, the duo soon find that their lives are in danger while trying to solve the mystery of the teen's death.” A sequel to Wind River, titled Wind River: Uprising, has already wrapped filming, but it’s still unclear at this time when it will be released. Neither Jeremy Renner nor Elizabeth Olsen are returning to star in the sequel.
