It's fair to say artificial intelligence is a lot less fictional than it first felt 25 years ago, but thankfully ChatGPT, Claude and Grok haven't been looking for the Blue Fairy lately, just threatening to become self-aware. Steven Spielberg tried to view it as a more innocent thing back then, but his deeply strange, frequently devastating sci-fi epic imagined a future where humanity has perfected artificial children only to find they cannot handle it at all.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence is officially getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release on December 15, 2026, with a new 25th anniversary SteelBook edition, giving one of the director's boldest swings another chance to crush those who go into it expecting a sci-fi romp along the lines of Ready Player One. Don't be fooled, this will defeat you.

The film was the original, long-gestating idea of the legendary Stanley Kubrick, who spent years developing the project before eventually handing it to Spielberg. When Kubrick passed away in 1999, Spielberg decided to move forward with the film himself, and it was a fascinating juxtaposition between two filmmaking styles.

The cast is led by Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) as Gigolo Joe, Frances O'Connor (The Conjuring 2) as Monica Swinton, Sam Robards (American Beauty) as Henry Swinton, Jake Thomas (Lizzie McGuire) as Martin Swinton, William Hurt (A History of Violence) as Professor Hobby, Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) as Lord Johnson-Johnson, and Jack Angel (Toy Story) as the voice of Teddy.

How Good Is 'A.I. Artificial Intelligence'?

The film divided audiences when it first arrived in theaters but in the years since, it's undergone a critical and cultural reassessment. The movie currently holds a 76% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with particular praise going to the ambition and visuals from Spielberg, the questions it asks about humanity, and the stunning performance of the young Osment. It went on to earn $236 million worldwide against a $100 million production budget, and received two Academy Award nominations, for Best Visual Effects and John Williams' original score.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the United States on December 15, 2026.
