Ridley Scott has had a rough go at things in 2026, but there was plenty of anticipation behind his return to the sci-fi genre with The Dog Stars. It had been almost 10 years since Scott visited the sci-fi world as a director with Alien: Covenant, which was also once thought to be the last Alien movie of his career. The Dog Stars stumbled hard at the box office, though, and after recently being removed from over 1,000 theaters, it’s poised to conclude its theatrical run as one of Scott’s lowest-grossing movies in history. Scott isn’t letting The Dog Stars’ box office disappointment stop him from moving on with a new film, though, as he’ll be back on the big screen next November with a remake of Treasure Island starring Hugh Jackman.
One of the more interesting revelations to come from The Dog Stars press tour came when Ridley Scott announced he was working with Michael Fassbender to develop a new Alien movie centered around his character, David. Scott said the reason he was returning to the franchise was that he felt it “needed some help,” calling Alien: Romulus “just okay” after previously praising the film. Scott directed the first ever Alien movie all the way back in 1979, and the film was such a massive success that it spawned a franchise still going strong to this day. Two years after Alien: Romulus crushed at the box office, grossing over $350 million globally against an $80 million budget, the film has found a streaming home on Hulu. The film has also found success on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV.
What’s Next in the Alien Franchise?
The Alien franchise will return next year for the premiere of Alien: Earth Season 2, the second season in the hit TV series developed by Noah Hawley (Fargo). No word yet on exactly when the show will return to streaming, but it’s now in the weeds of production, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it came back in the first half of the year as opposed to the second half. 20th Century has also confirmed its developing a sequel to Alien: Romulus, but little is known about the film at this time, other than Fede Alvarez is writing the script but not returning to direct.
