Not only did Zach Cregger's critically acclaimed Resident Evil reboot break the franchise's opening-weekend box office record, but it also outgrossed the lifetime hauls of nearly every previous installment in a single weekend. The new Resident Evil is also the highest-rated installment of the long-running horror franchise by a significant margin, and is all but guaranteed to become the series' top-grossing entry when the dust settles. The record currently stands at around $60 million domestically and around $310 million worldwide. Cregger is coming off two back-to-back horror hits, the original films Barbarian and Weapons, which grossed approximately $45 million and $270 million worldwide, respectively.
Even though both movies were "Certified Fresh" on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes with exceptionally high ratings — Weapons also won an Oscar — the new Resident Evil has them beat. It now holds a 95% score on the aggregator, making it one of the highest-rated horror films and video game adaptations of all time. The site's consensus reads, "Packing unforgettable scares into a sleek runtime while Austin Abrams' crack comedic timing provides crucial levity, Zach Cregger's Resident Evil is a propulsive tribute to the pleasure and terror of playing a truly spooky video game." The movie also holds a "Verified Hot" 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to a B+ grade on CinemaScore, which should help its performance in the long run.
