Several mid-budget genre movies distributed by streaming-first companies have underperformed at the box office recently. Titles like Guy Ritchie's In the Grey, David Ayer's A Working Man, and the action sequel The Accountant 2 have all been highly successful on Prime Video, even if they weren't exactly theatrical blockbusters. There is, however, another category of mega-budget movies that have also gained solid traction at home but can't help but be categorized as box-office bombs. Last year, it was the action comedy Red One, which grossed less than $100 million domestically against a reported budget of $250 million. This year, another sci-fi fantasy film has taken its place.
The movie in question, like Red One, was likely designed as a franchise-starter. While there was some chatter about the studio wanting to proceed with a sequel despite the lackluster box-office performance of the first film, there has been no official word on the matter so far. The 2026 film cost a reported $170 million to produce, but grossed only around $120 million worldwide. Of that total, roughly $65 million came from domestic theaters. Reviews weren't glowing either, although some found its irreverence endearing. Now, the movie has passed a major milestone on streaming, which will only increase the likelihood of Amazon greenlighting a sequel.
