Jane Austen is one of the most-adapted authors in the canon of English literature, and the latest silver screen interpretation of her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, is headed to theaters this fall. Georgia Oakley's new rendition of the novel, which stars Outlander's Caitríona Balfe in her first major role since that series concluded earlier this year, will premiere in US theaters on October 16. You can get a first look at the film in a new trailer.

The novel, which was first published pseudonymously in 1811, concerns the Dashwood family, a once well-to-do clan who find themselves living in diminished circumstances following the death of the family patriarch. The narrative primarily concerns Marianne, the 16-year-old daughter of the family, and her sister Elinor. Marianne finds herself torn between two flawed suitors: Colonel Brandon, an upstanding man who's more than twice her age, and John Willoughby, a seemingly kindred spirit who may conceal more secrets than he's letting on. Elinor, meanwhile, finds herself entangled with the unassuming Edward Ferrars. It has been adapted for the screen many times, most famously by Ang Lee in 1995, with Emma Thompson (who also penned the script), Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman in the lead roles.

In the trailer, Esmé Creed-Miles (The Chronology of Water) stars as Marianne, with Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters) as Elinor. They share a deep sisterly bond, one that is threatened by the encroachment of adulthood. Balfe stars as their mother, while Marianne's suitors, Colonel Brandon, and John Willoughby, are played by Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World) and Frank Dillane (The Essex Serpent), respectively; George MacKay (1917) plays Edward Ferrars. Oakley (Blue Jean) directs, while the novel was adapted for the screen by newcomer Diana Reid.

What Other Jane Austen Adaptations Are in the Works?

This is shaping up to be a bountiful harvest season for Austen devotees. December will see the release of a new six-part miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice from Dolly Alderton and Netflix; it stars Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden, Olivia Colman, and Rufus Sewell. Meanwhile, The Other Bennet Sister, an adaptation of the Janice Hadlow novel that examined Pride and Prejudice from a different perspective, premiered on the BBC and BritBox earlier this year; a three-part Christmas special continuation is expected this holiday season.
