Many casting choices throughout Hollywood history have caused consternation, but it might be fair to say that few have been debated as hotly as the casting of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. The actor first played Lee Child's wandering former military policeman in 2012's Jack Reacher, but there was always a fairly obvious elephant in the room — or, perhaps more accurately, a considerably smaller man standing where the elephant was supposed to be.

Child's Reacher is famously, nonsensically large, and it's not as if Child is rewriting history when he talks about how Cruise may have lacked the stature for the part. Speaking exclusively with Collider ahead of the release of his new novel, Child described Cruise as "completely and utterly wrong" for Reacher. However, he also thinks the actor understood something much more important beneath the character's imposing exterior. Child told Collider:

“Obviously, he was completely and utterly wrong for the character. I thought, as an actor, he captured the internals pretty well — the silent characteristic and so on. I thought internally he did really well, but externally it didn’t work.”

For Child, one particular moment from Jack Reacher perfectly illustrates the problem. The movie tells the audience to expect a man capable of killing someone with a single blow before Cruise appears, creating a disconnect between the Reacher being described and the actor audiences actually see. "There's a line in that first movie where the cop goes to the motel desk and basically says, 'I'm looking for a guy who could kill somebody with one blow,' and the clerk says, 'Oh, room 12,' and Tom Cruise comes out. You know, not really."

Tom Cruise Still Understood Who Jack Reacher Was

Obviously, the total mismatch between the 6ft 5in, 250lb Jack Reacher on the page and Cruise on-screen was too much for many to overcome, but that's not to say Cruise did a bad job. Far from it, as Child did make the point that Cruise still understood the internal voice of Reacher. Cruise's version remains quiet, controlled, and intimidating without needing to constantly announce it. That's the "internal" Reacher Child believes the actor successfully found.

Child also stressed elsewhere in his conversation with Collider that his feelings about the casting shouldn't be confused with his feelings about Cruise himself. He described working with the actor as a pleasure and said he genuinely liked spending time with him. Cruise may not have looked like Jack Reacher, but he respected him enough, and he truly understood him, and that's what makes the films worth exploring.

Jack Reacher is available to rent or buy digitally. Lee Child was speaking exclusively to Collider in support of Chain Reaction, the latest Jack Reacher novel, which arrives October 20. Child will also co-write Zero Margin, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe, arriving in spring 2027. Sign up for a free trial of Audible to explore more books and comics.
