Paul W.S. Anderson, one of the most commercially successful auteur directors of the 2000s, tried to diversify his output after directing several Resident Evil films. Both of his attempts to branch out — two period movies — underperformed critically and commercially. In 2011, Anderson directed an action-packed reimagining of The Three Musketeers, starring Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Mads Mikkelsen, Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom and others. Despite the stacked cast, the movie grossed around $130 million worldwide and scored 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. Two years later, Anderson released another period movie that fell short of box-office expectations and received poor reviews. That movie is currently streaming on Netflix, but only for a little while longer.

It marked the big-screen starring debut of Kit Harington, who had recently broken out with HBO's Game of Thrones. He starred alongside Emily Browning, best known for A Series of Unfortunate Events and Sucker Punch. The film centered on the romance between their characters, set against the backdrop of a real-life tragedy — similar to Titanic and Pearl Harbor. As with his Three Musketeers movie, Anderson assembled an eclectic cast that included Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Carrie-Anne Moss.
