Best known for playing Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Josh Brolin has been booked solid with new projects in recent years. Brolin even has a new film in theaters this weekend, Whalefall, the survival thriller co-starring Austin Abrams that follows a scuba diver trapped in an 80-foot whale with just one hour of oxygen left to escape. 2025 was also a busy year for Brolin, who began it starring in one of the most successful horror films of the 2020s, Weapons, from writer/director Zach Cregger. He followed Weapons with a role in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and also starred as Dan Killian opposite Glen Powell in The Running Man, now streaming on Paramount Plus.

Josh Brolin has had dozens of famous roles over the years, but one fans have gravitated toward, especially on streaming, is Matt Graver. Brolin first played the agent in the 2015 film Sicario, written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Denis Villeneuve, and returned to the role just three years later in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, also written by Sheridan but directed by Stefano Sollima. There had been whispers about a third Sicario film for years, but fans were elated earlier this month when news broke that the original Sicario trio — Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro — were reuniting for a third film to be written by Steven Knight and directed by Padraic McKinley. In a recent interview with THR to discuss his new project Whalefall, Brolin gave a major update on Sicario 3, teasing the "undeniable" strength of Knight's script:

“We were always looking at scripts. We always wanted to do it. We didn’t intend to wait this long, but you have Benny [del Toro], Emily [Blunt] and me looking at things and reacting to filmmakers or scripts differently,” Brolin shares. “But then Steven Knight wrote a script that was incredible, and it was kind of undeniable. All of us reacted similarly. So we’re very excited about doing it. We’ll do it next year. We have a great filmmaker, Padraic McKinley, who we think is going to make a very good movie, and we’re excited.”

When Is 'Sicario 3' Coming to Theaters?

Although it was confirmed that Sicario 3 is officially in the works with a complete script, there has been no word yet on when the film will be released in theaters. Sicario 3 is expected to shoot next year, which leaves the most likely release window sometime in 2028. Some fans are skeptical that Taylor Sheridan is no longer involved in the third Sicario film, but with Knight's writing credits and McKinley's directing history, it's clear the franchise is in good hands.
