2026 has been one of the busiest years of Guy Ritchie's career, and when you're putting out so many projects at once, it's only natural that some will be received better than others. Ritchie's first project of the year was an expansion of the Sherlock Holmes universe via the Prime Video prequel series, Young Sherlock, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular character. Prime Video has already picked up the show for Season 2, but it's unclear at this time when it will be released. Ritchie stumbled with his return to theaters back in May with In The Grey, the action thriller co-starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. The film bombed at the box office before going on to become one of the most-watched movies on VOD platforms as well as its current streaming home, Starz.
Guy Ritchie has directed dozens of action movies and crime thrillers over the years, but one that's nearing the status of being a cult classic is RocknRolla. Ritchie wrote the script for the film, which is now nearly 20 years old, and to this day, it's still widely viewed as one of his more puzzling flops. Ritchie enlisted some star-studded talent to headline RocknRolla, including Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, and even Mark Strong, but the film grossed only $25 million at the box office against an $18 million budget. 18 years after RocknRolla left theaters, the film is available to watch on Prime Video, but there's a catch. Prime Video subscribers must also purchase or gain access to a free trial of a Howdy subscription, but the movie is also available to watch on VOD platforms.
What Is 'RocknRolla' About?
RocknRolla is a film of a different era, particularly from the time of the 2000s when Ritchie was directing some of the most iconic crime thrillers of all time. Additional cast members for RocknRolla include Tom Wilkinson as Lenny Cole, Thandiwe Newton as Stella, Tom Hardy as Handsome Bob, and Jeremy Piven as Roman. The official synopsis for the film, which earned scores of 60% from critics and 71% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:
“Old-school mobster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) rules London's underworld with an iron fist and a score of well-greased palms. As big-time gangsters and petty crooks all scramble to get their cut of a Russian mobster's crooked land deal, street-wise hustler One Two (Gerard Butler) tries to play both sides of the fence as the lucrative deal falls into the lap of Lenny's presumed-dead son.”
