2026 has been another banner year for Robert Pattinson, who is in line to earn the first Oscar nomination of his career. It's just unclear at the time which role will be recognized. Pattinson began the year by starring opposite Zendaya in the A24-backed rom-com, The Drama, which is streaming on HBO Max. The duo reunited earlier in the summer for The Odyssey, the box office smash-hit historical epic from director Christopher Nolan, and they'll reunite later this year in Dune: Part Three, which hails from director Denis Villeneuve. In between The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three, Pattinson can be seen in theaters taking on one of the most complicated roles of his career, Chris Hansen from Dateline NBC. He stars as the TV figure in the new movie, Primetime, which is now playing in theaters.
Pattinson had been around for years as an underrated actor, but many people just knew him as “the guy from Twilight.” It wasn't until 2022 when he starred as Bruce Wayne in The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, that it became clear what a special talent he is. After years of delays and uncertainty, Warner Bros' finally began production on The Batman Part II earlier this year, but the film was pushed from its October 2027 launch date to a new February 2028 release slot. Fans were devastated a few weeks ago when it was confirmed that production on The Batman Part II had come to a halt after director Matt Reeves had to leave the set to deal with a family matter, but there have been few updates about resuming filming since the announcement.
However, The Batman fans were dealt another shocking blow later this afternoon when news broke that whatever personal matter Reeves is dealing with is so severe that he is taking a step back as the lead director going forward, but he won't leave the film without a director. Reports indicate that Steven Soderbergh will take over on set in his stead for the final few weeks of production, and Reeves is expected to resume control for post-production when he's able to return. There was initial concern that the movie would be canceled, but with Soderbergh's help, it's expected to still hit its 2028 launch date. The studio's official statement on the announcement reads as follows:
“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”
Who Is in 'The Batman Part II' Cast?
Returning to star in The Batman Part II from the first film are Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Newcomers to the cast include Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, who were rumored but not confirmed to play members of the Dent family. There has been rampant speculation that Sebastian Stan has been cast as Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. Game of Thrones veteran Charles Dance is also confirmed to star in an undisclosed role in the film, along with Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.
