Ben Affleck has been in the headlines again for his latest Netflix movie Animals, and it's not for all the right reasons. The film is being blasted on social media, which was a big miss from an actor-director people have come to expect a lot from. Animals follows The Rip, which was divisive in its own right, so Affleck's recent Netflix run has been a bit of a mixed bag. Thankfully, there's finally something to look forward to, because one of his most beloved Netflix originals just got a promising new update.

This 2019 action thriller had a stacked cast featuring Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal as five ex-U.S. Army Special Forces operatives who reunite for a high-stakes, off-the-books heist to rob a South American drug lord. And in classic action movie fashion, things go very, very wrong. The film holds a stellar 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely placed in conversations about the best heist films of all time.

That film is Triple Frontier. It was expected to be a one-off title, but ever since it debuted on Netflix, fans have been begging for a sequel. Hunnam revealed in late 2023 that a sequel was in development and that he had signed on as a main producer for Triple Frontier 2, but things had been mostly quiet since then. That was until now. Hedlund recently sat down with ScreenRant to promote Tulsa King Season 4, and he let it be known that the Triple Frontier sequel is still floating around, with a first draft of the script already completed. That's a huge step for a project that has been in limbo this long.

'Triple Frontier 2' Has a Script, But the Cast's Schedules Are the Real Problem

Hedlund then went on to explain that the cast's busy schedule is one of the biggest hurdles stalling the sequel. Obviously, locking down a shooting schedule with this many A-list actors is going to be incredibly difficult. Spoiler alert for Triple Frontier: Affleck's character dies in that movie, so that's one less shooting calendar to worry about.

But the rest of the squad isn't free either. Hunnam is currently developing, executive producing, and starring in Legends, a meta-thriller that reunites him with several Sons of Anarchy co-stars playing themselves at a fan convention. Hedlund is tied up with Tulsa King. Pascal is probably the toughest of the bunch, now playing Mando in Star Wars and Reed Richards in the MCU. And Isaac has Beyond the Spider-Verse lines and promos to get through, plus an upcoming Netflix series called The Roman. So, even if the sequel ends up happening, it's probably going to be a while, but it's nice to know it's still moving forward.
