There's no doubt that the return of Tom Holland's Friendly Neighborhood hero in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has defined the 2026 summer box office. Breaking box office records on its very first day on screens, the latest MCU installment has been unstoppable in its conquering of many major milestones, most notably overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film of all time domestically. But the so-called "best Spidey adventure in 20 years" hasn't been the most enduring of the summer titles.
The most enduring from this mammoth summer of cinema is, without doubt, Christopher Nolan's ambitious adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, which just so happens to also star Holland and his Brand New Day castmates Zendaya and Jon Bernthal. This past weekend, The Odyssey earned another $2 million domestically, finishing inside the box office top ten once again, despite having now been in theaters for a remarkable 13 weeks. In total, The Odyssey has now earned $1.779 billion worldwide, making it the 11th-highest-grossing film of all time, unadjusted for inflation.
But the box office records don't stop there. As per an exclusive from Variety, The Odyssey is now the highest-grossing international feature ever in Korean box office history. As of October 11, Nolan's most successful film yet has earned a cumulative KRW139.2 billion, which translates to $101.5 million. Just two Korean titles have earned more than The Odyssey in the region, namely Jang Hang-jun's 2026 effort The King's Warden and Lee Byeong-heon's 2019 comedy Extreme Job. Variety reports that the equivalent of about 24% of the country's population has been to see The Odyssey.
'The Odyssey' Is the Current Oscars Front-Runner
As it stands, The Odyssey is the front-runner to win the coveted Best Picture prize at the Academy Awards next year. Of course, there are still several titles yet to be released that look likely to change these odds, but there is no doubt that Nolan's latest epic will secure plenty of nominations, perhaps even breaking the noms record set this year by Ryan Coogler's Sinners. The Odyssey was called an "unrivaled cinematic spectacle" in Joe Schmidt's review for Collider, and received universal gushing praise upon release.
