Kevin Feige has been a lifelong fan of both Star Wars and Marvel, as may not be a huge shock to, well, anyone. And a few years ago, it was announced that Feige would be overseeing his own Star Wars project. News of that went quiet, but now, a project that Feige's fingerprints will be all over when it's released has been announced. And this is a wild one.

Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm have officially announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a major crossover event that will bring characters from both universes together for the first time. The limited comic series, written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez, will launch in January 2027 as part of the celebrations marking 50 years since Star Wars: A New Hope arrived in theaters in 1977.

The story begins, as they so often do between those pages, when a magical spell shatters reality and it brings the events of the original Star Wars movie into Marvel's Earth-616 universe. Suddenly, the Avengers and Spider-Man find themselves caught up in the Galactic Civil War, with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca crossing paths with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. And yes, Doctor Doom is going to buddy up with Darth Vader.

Star Wars and Marvel Have Been Connected for 50 Years

Marvel and Star Wars have a long history together. Marvel published the first Star Wars comic in 1977, which was a hugely useful way introduce audiences to new adventures involving Luke, Leia and Han outside the original movie. And of course, Smith should need no introduction to comic fans. His previous work includes Clerks and numerous Marvel and DC comic projects, and he's been a lifelong fan of both franchises. The writer explained that he had dreamed of seeing characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Doom enter the Star Wars universe since reading Marvel's original comics in the 1980s.

“Back in the early 1980s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics,” he explained in the official announcement. “And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga. So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I’m ecstatic to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! Many thanks to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me fly the Falcon and the Quinjet! I can’t wait to show you the Saga through a Marvel Entertainment prism, including the titanic team-up of Darth Vader and Doctor Doom!”

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles launches in January 2027, bringing two of entertainment's biggest franchises together for a crossover fans have been imagining for decades.
