When you think about getting promoted to the role of a captain, there are easier ways of going about it than taking over when your own captain dies, stealing a starship, and getting involved with time travel, or ending up on an ice planet with Leonard Nimoy. But then, James T. Kirk has never done things the easy way.
Chris Pine's (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) complete Star Trek reboot trilogy is officially streaming together on Peacock. Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond were all added to the service this month, timed to coincide with the franchise's 60th anniversary and Star Trek Day on September 8.
The trilogy begins with J.J. Abrams' (Super 8) 2009 reboot, which uses a time-traveling Romulan named Nero to create an alternate reality separate from the original continuity. When the Federation receives a distress signal from planet Vulcan during a hearing to decide whether Kirk has cheated on his final test at the academy, his friend Dr. McCoy sneaks him aboard the USS Enterprise as it sets out on its maiden voyage. In Into Darkness, the crew of the Starship Enterprise returns home after an act of terrorism within its own organization destroys most of Starfleet. And finally, in Beyond, left stranded after an attack in space, Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew must battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.
The main ensemble is led by Pine as James T. Kirk alongside Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock, Zoe Saldaña (Avatar) as Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban (The Boys) as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible) as Montgomery Scott, John Cho (Searching) as Hikaru Sulu, and the late Anton Yelchin (Green Room) as Pavel Chekov. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) joins Into Darkness as Khan, while Idris Elba (Luther) plays Krall in Beyond.
How Good Is the 'Star Trek' Reboot Trilogy?
The first Star Trek remains the critical high point with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Into Darkness and Beyond both sit comfortably in Fresh territory. More importantly, the trilogy managed the fairly difficult trick of making Star Trek work as huge modern action cinema without completely abandoning the characters and optimism that made the franchise last in the first place. Financially, the three movies were substantial theatrical performers, too. Star Trek earned roughly $386 million worldwide, Into Darkness climbed to around $467 million, and Beyond finished with approximately $344 million.
The Star Trek reboot trilogy is streaming now on Peacock.
