Director Lance Oppenheim's buzzy new psychological thriller Primetime, based on Chris Hansen's To Catch a Predator series from the mid-2000s, exceeded box-office projections in its opening weekend of release. The movie's premise and portrayal of Hansen appear to have caught the attention of a massive audience, with Hansen himself inadvertently publicizing it with his comments. He has claimed that he wasn't consulted for it, and was presented with a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) after it had been made. He refused to sign the NDA and has now watched the movie as a paying member of the audience, contributing to its terrific opening-weekend haul. As expected, Hansen also shared a detailed review of the film, giving Robert Pattinson a D grade for his performance.
He described Primetime as "so detached" from his lived reality as the host of To Catch a Predator that it comes across as mostly fictional. Admitting that he isn't the most objective reviewer of the film, Hansen called the movie a "hit-piece" against him and his show. "If this is a love letter, I'd hate to get a poison pen letter from this director," he said. Also starring Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and Phoebe Bridgers, the movie opened to excellent reviews, and is now sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 87% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads, "Turning the camera's scrutinizing eye back onto To Catch a Predator's journalistic legacy, Primetime interrogates the slippery boundary between justice and lurid spectacle with crackling style and an outstanding Robert Pattinson."
