A textbook counter-programming play was set up this week at the box office, with the Amazon MGM psychological thriller Verity and the Warner Bros. satirical epic Digger. However, the face-off ended up being a one-sided affair, with Verity overperforming in its debut frame and Digger falling short of even the most pessimistic projections. Coming on the heels of fellow Colleen Hoover adaptation It Ends with Us, which grossed more than $350 million worldwide a couple of years ago, Verity had positive momentum heading into release. Directed by Michael Showalter, the movie marks the third major hit of the year for star Anne Hathaway.

She also played key roles in the box-office behemoths The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2, which grossed a combined total of around $2.5 billion worldwide. More recently, she starred alongside Ewan McGregor in the sci-fi movie The End of Oak Street, which ended its run with roughly $120 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million. In Verity, she appears alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Johnson, of course, has had experience with blockbuster literary adaptations, having starred in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy at the start of her career. Hartnett, on the other hand, is on a comeback trail, having appeared in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and M. Night Shyamalan's Trap in recent years.
