Robin Hood has been robbing from the rich and giving to the poor for centuries, but apparently even he couldn't steal enough ticket sales to save Andrew Garfield's latest historical epic. His latest film, which couldn't seem to decide if it was or it wasn't actually a Robin Hood movie, was sufficiently confused enough to also put off audiences and so it's no surprise that, after struggling to make much of an impact during its theatrical run, Garfield's medieval rebellion is already preparing to fight another day at home.
Universal has announced that The Uprising will arrive on digital platforms on September 29, where it will be available to purchase or rent without a subscription. The PVOD release comes months before the movie is expected to become available through a subscription streaming service, while physical collectors can pick it up on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD beginning November 3.
The Uprising is described as an epic tale inspired by the true events that shaped the legend of Robin Hood. Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Hacksaw Ridge) stars as the leader of a ferocious rebellion against King Richard II. As war engulfs England, he unites the people into a powerful force, fighting for justice and survival, and showcasing the sacrifices and hardships they must face to become something greater. The film is directed by the acclaimed Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips, United 93).
Who Stars in 'The Uprising'?
Garfield, a two-time Academy Award nominee, leads an impressive ensemble alongside Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones), Tom Hollander (The White Lotus), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary), Woody Norman (C'mon C'mon), and Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant).
The Uprising opened to just $3.3 million domestically from more than 2,000 theaters and has earned approximately $7.8 million worldwide so far, including $6.46 million in North America. That makes its arrival on PVOD less than three weeks after its September 11 domestic theatrical release considerably less surprising. Critics also weren't exactly enamored, either, and it currently holds a 54% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes from 95 reviews, alongside a slightly stronger 64% verified audience score.
The Uprising will be available to purchase or rent digitally on September 29, followed by its 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD release on November 3.
