Director Zack Snyder is no stranger to fan support — his admirers rallied together and got Warner Bros. to fund a director's cut of Snyder's Justice League — but he created a monster, and the monster seems to have gotten out of control. Snyder's latest film, The Last Photograph, received venomous reviews after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, with many describing it as the worst film of the director's career and among the worst to have played at TIFF. Now, Snyder has reacted to the film's reception and made it clear that some of the allegations hurled at him, that he is a homophobe and a fascist, are entirely untrue.
In an interview with Variety, Snyder said that he was initially taken aback by the reactions, but a part of him feels that drawing such an extreme response from his audience is necessary. "The amount of energy and the amount of vitriol I find really incredible. 'I want to kill Zack Snyder.' 'Zack Snyder is a fascist.' 'Zack Snyder is a homophobe.' 'Zack Snyder is a bisexual'," he said, adding that he is obviously not a fascist. Snyder's last two features, the mega-budget Netflix sci-fantasy epics Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, dealt with themes of fascism quite overtly. They were also critically panned, like The Last Photograph.
