Will Smith is set to return to the big screen for the first time in over two years with the action thriller Supermax. The film, which features a murder mystery set in a high-security prison, just took a major step towards completion. Smith hasn't graced the big screen since 2004, when the action sequel Bad Boys: Ride or Die grossed $405 million USD in theaters.
Supermax is directed by David Gordon Green, the helmer of the recent Halloween trilogy. Smith stars alongside AnnaSophia Robb (Rebel Ridge) as a pair of FBI agents who are dispatched to a "supermax" high-security prison, where a seemingly impossible murder has taken place. Also starring in the film are Jaafar Jackson (Michael), Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Eric and Lyle Menendez Story), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter). It's from a script by David Weil (Hunters) and David J. Rosen (Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed), and is produced by The Picture Company's Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman and Westbrook Studios' Smith and Adam Fishbach.
The movie's creative director, Ariana Whittingham, commemorated the end of filming with a post on Instagram, featuring photos of the film's cast and crew. The film does not yet have a release date, but it is set to be released by Amazon MGM Studios. The studio has released a number of its movies to theaters, including this year's Project Hail Mary and Masters of the Universe, while sending other projects straight to its Prime Video streaming service, including The Runner and The Love Hypothesis. Green's last film, the holiday comedy Nutcrackers, was released on Hulu; Smith, too, has starred in streaming-original films before, including the fantasy actioner Bright and the historical drama Emancipation.
What Other Projects Is Will Smith Working On?
Smith is said to be involved with a sequel to his apocalyptic science fiction film I Am Legend, which will reportedly also star Michael B. Jordan, with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and director Steven Caple Jr. attached; although Smith's character, Robert Neville, perishes at the end of the theatrical cut of the film, a sequel will reportedly continue from the director's cut, which sees him survive. Smith was previously attached to Sugar Bandits, a thriller directed by Sicario: Day of the Soldado's Stefano Sollima; however, he exited that project over scheduling issues.
