An exceptionally rare Pikachu card from one of the Pokémon TCG's most unusual promotional releases has just fetched a staggering $660,000 at auction. Originally awarded to a single artist as part of a 2015 illustration competition, the Pokémon Art Academy Lily-Chan Pikachu was produced in extraordinarily limited quantities, with just 100 copies given to its creator. More than a decade later, one of those cards has attracted some serious attention from wealthy collectors.

The PSA 10 example attracted 55 bids during Fanatics Collect's October 18 Weekly auction, with the $660,000 final price including the buyer's premium. The sale follows the recent extraordinary $8.4 million auction result for another Art Academy Pikachu, featuring Y. Fujishima's wonderfully charming illustration of a Pikachu wearing a red raincoat replete with matching headgear. Although Lily-Chan's offering didn't quite reach those heights, its price history reveals a similarly stunning rise.

What Makes the Lily-Chan Pikachu So Valuable?

The origins of this card trace back to a 2015 illustration competition held through the Nintendo 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy. Players were invited to submit original Pokémon artwork in two categories: Dress-Up Pikachu and Your Favorite Pokémon. The winning illustrations were subsequently turned into official Pokémon TCG cards, with each artist receiving 100 copies of their creation.

Lily-Chan, an artist from Spain, was among the winners of the European and Oceanian competition. Their delightful illustration features Pikachu sporting an elaborate winter-themed outfit, complete with decorative earmuffs and delicate snowflakes falling against a vivid, pastel-hued background. The card itself is printed in Spanish, making it a particularly unusual piece of Pokémon history.

PSA's population report currently lists just eight Gem Mint 10 copies of Lily-Chan's Pikachu, including the example featured in this latest auction.

Art Academy Pikachu Prices Have Gone Through the Roof

Perhaps the most staggering aspect of this sale is how dramatically the card's value has increased. According to PSA's recorded sales history, a Gem Mint 10 copy of Lily-Chan's Pikachu sold for just $1,276 in May 2019, followed by another at $2,826 in May 2020. Fast-forward to October 2026, and a card in the same grade has commanded $660,000. That's an increase of more than $658,000 over the 2019 result, showcasing the extraordinary growth in demand for these exceptionally scarce Pokémon cards.

And the Lily-Chan variant isn't the only international Art Academy Pikachu commanding enormous sums. Just one week earlier, another PSA 10 card featuring artwork by British contest winner Meli sold for exactly $660,000 at Fanatics Collect, following 34 bids. Apparently, collectors are willing to pay equally bank account-blasting sums whether Pikachu is dressed for the depths of winter, prepared for a rainy, blustery day, or busy serving delicious-looking pastries.

It's also part of a broader surge in high-end Pokémon collectibles. Three rare Southern Islands promo Pokémon cards recently combined for more than $1.1 million, while a PSA 10 Aquapolis Crystal Lugia reached $360,000 in another recent auction.

Still, there's something particularly fascinating about these Art Academy cards. What began as a creative competition for aspiring artists using a Nintendo handheld has, more than a decade later, produced some of the most valuable Pokémon cards in existence. Not bad for a somewhat obscure digital drawing contest.
