After spending the last few years with fast planes (in Top Gun: Maverick) and fast cars (in F1: The Movie), director Joseph Kosinski is gunning his engines for the greatest speedboat franchise of all time: Miami Vice. Before the cameras start rolling, he's assembling his cast for the glitz and glamor of 1980s Miami, and now he's got his villain, who had a star turn in this summer's The Odyssey.

Miami Vice '85, based on the classic 1980s TV series, will star Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan as James Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, a mismatched pair of vice cops who venture into the seedy underworld of 1980s Miami. It is also set to star Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons), Camila Morrone (Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), and Whitney Peak (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping). The film is set to be released on May 19, 2028.

Now, as per The Hollywood Reporter, John Leguizamo will join the film to play its primary villain. Leguizamo earned excellent notices this summer as Eumaeus, the blind, elderly, and ever-faithful servant to Odysseus in The Odyssey; there's some speculation that the veteran character actor could earn his first Oscar nomination for the role. It isn't slowing him down, however; he's also set to reunite with Odyssey co-star Matt Damon in the untitled new film from The Daniels, the follow-up to their Oscar-winning breakout Everything Everywhere All at Once. He's also starring in The Exorcist: Martyrs, the latest installment in the classic horror franchise, and will reprise his voice role as slow-witted sloth Sid in Ice Age: Boiling Point, the new entry in the long-running series of CG animated comedies.

What Is 'Miami Vice'?

Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, Miami Vice premiered on NBC in 1984. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, the show brought cinematic visuals and cutting-edge popular music to the small screen for the first time ever. It ended after five seasons, but Mann took it to the big screen in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as the leads. The film got mixed reviews at the time, but Mann devotees have since hailed it as a masterpiece.
