Tom Hardy's Brutal Western Masterpiece Is Officially Conquering the Global Charts Again

Following the return of the Theo James-led crime comedy The Gentlemen for a must-watch second season, Guy Ritchie's other great modern TV series is ready to shoot back onto our screens. Set to officially begin streaming on September 18, MobLand Season 2 will see Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia!), Helen Mirren (Gosford Park), and Paddy Considine (Doctor Sleep) all return alongside Tom Hardy's Harry Da Souza, following reports that he had been fired from the show amid off-screen conflicts, which were eventually squashed, and a third season starring Hardy greenlit.

MobLand is the latest in a long line of gritty performances from Hardy. Among them was a pivotal turn in a triple-Oscar-winning movie. Hardy starred as the main villain, John S. Fitzgerald, in the visually stunning The Revenant, which is led by Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, the role for which he finally won his first Academy Award for Best Actor. Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Best Director prize at the Academy Awards for the ambitious film, alongside his DOP, Emmanuel Lubezki, who took home the Best Cinematography prize.

The Revenant was a big hit both with critics and commercially, scoring a $530 million box office haul worldwide against a production budget of $135 million. Split between a domestic haul of $184 million and a further $349 million from overseas markets, this was enough to make The Revenant the 13th highest-grossing movie first released in 2015, which is made all the more impressive when considering the huge franchise blockbusters that debuted that year. 11 years later, The Revenant is a hit again, officially ranking as the third-most-watched movie on HBO Max in the world at the time of writing.

Alejandro González Iñárritu Is Returning With One of the Biggest New Movies

Since making The Revenant, Iñárritu hasn't returned to English-language filmmaking. That is, until 2026, when he joins forces with Tom Cruise, who is starring in his first non-franchise film since 2017's American Made, in the satirical black comedy Digger. Scheduled to hit theaters on October 2, 2026, Digger is already earning Oscars buzz courtesy of some tantalizing promotional material, although its status as a contender for the top prizes is yet to be decided.
