Tom Cruise doesn't play antagonists too often, and given the commercial performance of Digger, he will probably think twice before playing one again. Directed by the two-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger is projected to lose around $250 million for Warner Bros., making it one of the biggest box-office bombs in history. The political satire opened to divisive reviews, but has already shown signs of becoming a future cult classic. The last time that Cruise played something of a villain was in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. However, Cruise's most memorable heel turn came around two decades ago, in a neo-noir thriller that's currently streaming on Peacock in the United States, but only for a little while longer.

The movie features Cruise as an assassin who commandeers a cab and goes on a spree over the course of one night in Los Angeles. Jamie Foxx plays the cabbie, while Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, and Peter Berg appear in supporting roles. A major box-office hit — the movie grossed around $220 million worldwide against a reported budget of $65 million — it has developed a cult following of its own. It also remains notable for being one of the first major movies to be shot on high-definition video — a format further explored by director Michael Mann on his next film, Miami Vice.
