Tom Cruise saw his first box office bomb in decades with Digger. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the movie is an eco-satire that didn't sit well with the audience despite WB's best efforts. While fans and critics were very excited about the collaboration, the feature failed to recover its budget, but perhaps streaming and PVOD audiences will be kinder to the film.

Another movie that should have gotten more attention from the audience this year is Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, which marks his return to the genre after decades. While it did a decent run at the box office, earning $244.4 million worldwide on a $115 million budget, its streaming success is a different story. Nonetheless, there's another Spielberg alien invasion movie that is gaining traction on streaming and is giving tough competition to any movie, old or new. The film in question, War of the Worlds, led by Cruise, is counted among the best alien invasion movies. The story follows an estranged father, Ray (Cruise), as he tries to protect his children, Rachel and Robbie, during a catastrophic alien invasion. As massive, earth-shattering tripods destroy cities, the family attempts a desperate cross-country escape to reach safety.

Written by Spielberg's long-time collaborator David Koepp, the story focuses on the family's interpersonal dynamic and Ray's struggle to keep them safe. The themes touch on family bonds, survival, and how quickly social order dissolves in a crisis. It's often seen as an allegory of the post-9/11 trauma, with many visuals recounting the same kind of horror. Critics gave it a 76% Rotten Tomatoes score, while audiences gave it a 42%. Nonetheless, the movie was a big commercial hit, grossing over $603 million worldwide against a $132 million production budget. It further earned Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.
