Tim Burton's Gothic Horror Hit Rises Ahead of Sydney Sweeney's Remake

For better or for worse, Sydney Sweeney continues to make headlines. Her most recent sports ad has caused outrage on social media, but it feels as if this is just another day in the life of one of Hollywood's most famous names. Earlier this year, Sweeney was part of one of the most controversial seasons of television ever, as she, Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and Jacob Elordi teamed back up for Euphoria's third season.

The series might've proven an enormous streaming success, but this was driven in part by the very controversy that saw others tune out. Most of the outrage was leveled at creator Sam Levinson, with the aforementioned stars of the series proving how they have long outgrown it. For Sweeney, her next slate of projects will be important in rebuilding some of her damaged reputation, and a reimagining of the same source material as a Tim Burton classic is a great place to start.

Sweeney is attached to star in and produce Hollow, based on the debut novel by filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines), which itself is a feminist reimagining of Washington Irving's 1820 short story. Both the novel and Sweeney's movie are eyeing a Fall 2027 release date, as well as marking the first film production for Sweeney's banner, Honey Trap. The film stars Sweeney as Katrina Van Tassel, who finds herself in a love triangle between the brash Brom Bones and the intellectual Ichabod Crane, after being auctioned off for marriage to settle her family's debts. Ahead of the movie's arrival, the 1999 adaptation of Irving's story is a hit once more.

'Sleepy Hollow' Is a Streaming Hit

With both originating from the same material, Sweeney's Hollow is destined to be compared to the 1999 horror flick Sleepy Hollow, which is one of Burton's most brutal and best films to date. A similarly controversial figure, Johnny Depp, starred in the film alongside Christina Ricci, with the latter most recently working with Burton on Netflix's Wednesday. At the time of writing, after being recently added to the streamer's catalog, Sleepy Hollow is one of the ten most-streamed titles on Tubi in the U.S.
