Prime Video is enjoying the success of the new Carrie limited series, which updates Stephen King's seminal horror novel for a new generation and sets up a possible universe. Carrie had previously been adapted into two films, the first directed by Brian De Palma in 1976 and the second by Kimberly Peirce in 2013. The new series received excellent reviews and managed to overtake Reacher and its spin-off Neagley on the Prime Video streaming charts. New fans eager to check out King's past work might want to head over to HBO Max, where one of his best-received adaptations will be available until the end of the month.
The movie in question is the only King adaptation to win an Oscar, which is rather surprising, given the scores of movies that have been inspired by his books. Remember, while The Shawshank Redemption received seven Academy Award nominations, it didn't win in any category. More remarkably, The Shining was the only one of Stanley Kubrick's final nine movies to receive zero Oscar nominations. King wasn't unlike Taylor Sheridan, whose work continues to have deep cultural impact with next to no awards recognition.
