The 1966 Western Quentin Tarantino Called a "Revelation" Is Streaming for Free

Quentin Tarantino has often said that the "best-directed movie" of all time, in his opinion, of course, is Sergio Leone's towering spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Released in 1966, the movie introduced mainstream audiences to a different kind of experience than they were accustomed to. Even though the film was headlined by Clint Eastwood, its tone and texture were unlike the American Westerns that had become the dominant genre in entertainment over the last few decades. Tarantino ranks The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as his favorite spaghetti Western of all time, but the director he feels more of a kinship to is "the other Sergio" — Sergio Corbucci, who made grimier films in the shadow of his more illustrious namesake during the same period. Now, Corbucci's most well-known film is streaming for free in the United States.

The film was released in 1966 as well, mainly to capitalize on the success of Leone's A Fistful of Dollars. It featured Franco Nero in the lead role, and was instantly controversial for its violence. It was effectively banned in the United Kingdom for a number of years, and was barely given a release in the United States. All of these factors contributed to the movie remaining mostly under the radar, while Leone's Dollars Trilogy rose in prominence. It has since developed quite a formidable reputation, thanks in no small part to Tarantino's vocal support.
